THE MYTH OF THE CAT LADY

I saw this book cover and I had to laugh. Ahh, the myth of the cat lady. Although, I guess when most people think of cat ladies, they think frumpy. I doubt that they envision somebody in high heals, especially wearing the so called "come f me pumps." Knitting goes with the image. Drunk? Not exactly. Tea would more aptly be the drink of choice for a cat lady.
But really, what the heck is this cat lady thing about in the first place? Nobody goes around and gives men with dogs a hard time. In fact, they are probably going to be seen in a good light. Some guy in a park walking his dog is a chick magnet. Now, picture how sit-coms portray cat ladies. Get my drift? It's not exactly an item that an individual would advertise in a personal ad. It sends off an image of mustiness...dare I say...spinsterhood?
Let's be honest, though. Who would you rather have the extended conversation with? Let's assume that looks don't come into play with it. Would you rather talk to dog man or cat lady? All in all, I have noticed that the cat ladies amongst us tend to be the librarians of the world while the dog men are the guys who yell at the umpire on the sports station. Guess who knows that Monet and Manet aren't the same person?
Now, one thing that I have noticed is that a guy who likes cats is almost always a wonderful human being. They tend to be intelligent, liberal, kind and very independent. It's a pretty good litmus test. I knew a guy who loved cats and when I heard that he was moving back to town, I told a female friend that she had to meet him; that he was a great person and that they'd get along well. She has more pets then I do. They are now married and rescue ferals.
Women get called so many derogatory terms. I once had a couple of ignorant "jocks en masse" types walk by me and laughing, they made some comment about the blond reading. I looked up at them, flipped up the book (which was something like Sartre or Ionesco) and asked them if they wanted to have a discourse about the book. They seemed to take offence at that. On the one hand, they make like they have contempt for "dumb" blonds and women. In truth, that's who they like. So hey...I guess I can handle the cat lady insults.

PROP EIGHT BITES THE DUST

I just heard that the California courts have repealed Prop 8. Clank the glasses and start the music. Why do I care, some may ask? As a little girl, I never wanted Barbie's wedding ensemble. I've never purchased "Bride's" magazine in order to moon over the ensembles. Ugly bride's-maids dresses have never quite been my thing; I have worn enough chiffon and mint green in my lifetime, thank you very much. Not once at these festive gatherings have I stood gathered in hopes of catching that bouquet.  It would be easier to go through life if  I could have that Goodhouse Keeping stamp of approval with gifts galore and the welcome wagon at my door. I happen to value the ability to curl up with a good book when I feel like it. Besides, I have jealous cats.
We still have areas in this country where gay people don't feel safe walking down the street holding hands.  Bashing still happens, or name calling or "looks."  People have been asked to leave restaurants and Bed and Breakfasts.   There are cities that are blessed with their open mindedness, yet there are also people who would take their time to drive their to harass. In my town there's one woman who persists on writing letters to the editor decrying the downfall of Western Civilization perpetrated by the "homosexual agenda" and "immigrants." Given her very non-aboriginal sounding, Van-Something  name, I dare say the lady doth protest too much. I wonder if she lets out gasps of indignation when the older couple next door walks to the mail box hand-in-hand. Yet, by her definition, when two men do this they are pushing their beliefs onto others. I once worked with an individual with whom one could not discuss this issue in a reasonable manner, yet he'd persist in bringing it up. His rationale always fell back onto the tired line, "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve." Even when he was an acting supervisor he'd violate the code on discussing religion by bringing this up with brand new staff. Mind you, his wife was so stupid that she honestly called work one night when one of his sons had climbed a tree to ask what she should do. Those kinds of guys like them dumb.
People marched on Washington to state that laws were wrong. Until the late l960's, there were places where a black man and a white woman could not marry. Had the courts not intervened, those laws would have stayed on the books in some areas. I think Pierre Trudeau put it most eloquently when he stated that the state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation.
A number of years ago I was in the city when I ran into a guy I used to bowl with. We were on the same team for years. We went out to eat and caught up. He told me that he wanted to thank me for something. He them recounted an event which I had totally forgotten about but had meant the world to him. Darren had been on the drama team in junior high. He was a very talented individual. He was also teased mercilessly. Cars would slow as he walked along the street and idiot jocks would lean out and toss the "f" bomb. You know the word. At the bowling league, there was one group of guys that were ruthless towards him. Years later, Darren remembered how I stood up one day and called them out---how I told them off in front of everybody. I guess it mattered so much to him that a person would speak out in a public forum and state that it was wrong.
Ultimately, what the courts in California just did is the same thing. They said that this has to stop. It is wrong to hate a person based on something over which they have no control. It's like hating me because my hair is blond. What does it matter? Judge me for who I am as a person.
My Dad absolutely grasped this concept. My Dad wouldn't know what the ACLU was, yet he understood the inherent wrongness of homophobia. I realized two Christmases ago what an insightful and openminded man my father is. We were all about to sit down to eat when somebody brought up my neighbour's name. He had recently split from his boyfriend and he was alone. He and my mother do a lot of things together. In an instant, somebody was on the phone and he was invited over. After everybody else had gone to bed, he and my Dad were drinking Brandy until three in the morning. After he had gone home, my Dad and I talked for a while. Nobody in my family has ever talked about anything related to "the birds and bess". We've never had "the talk." But Dad said that he didn't care who our neighbour chose to date. He only cared that he was a good person. I guess that about sums it up. Why did it take so long for the learned judges in the courts to come to that conclusion?

DOWNWARD SPIRAL OF CATNIP ADDICTION

I like this song and this video. I also have a fat cat, only mine is called Lumpy. He too has a penchant for catnip. In the photos you'll see one of my other cats on his downward spiral.

WHAT I AM LISTENING TO

I like music that speaks to me. This song does just that. I've had a friend with a drug problem. It's really difficult to watch them sink.
On another note, I want to add that many people who struggle with eating disorders also use substances. Some may cross over into misuse of them. Initially, they may begin using the drugs as a way to control their eating and help in their weight loss. They then find that they are addicted to the drug. In this case it is not true that "no man can be a slave to two masters." When it comes to the truly compulsive, they can become addicted to the substance and driven by the need to lose more weight. In the future I mean to blog about Topamax. While it is not physically or mentally addicting like coke, it is being misused by people to drop weight. "Thinspiration" sites are telling people how to find doctors that will prescribe this drug. By the way, it was found in the bodies of both Anna Nicole Smith and Brittney Murphy. It is a good drug for it's true purpose; not for misuse to lose weight by the already underweight.
Enjoy the song. It's by a Canadian band.

Hengameh Solouki sentenced.

30-month prison sentence for female civil activist Hengameh Solouki

There is so much that we in the west don't hear about. This is very ironic, considering the internet has made it ever easier for us to get access to news from the rest of the world. Maybe it's because we don't care, or perhaps it's because we are overwhelmed. All too often, people turn their backs. However, we need to know and we need to care.
First of all, these are real people. What does it take? A Hollywood movie with some actor/actress that we recognize to make us care? Is it only real when we see it on the big screen with CGI?
Second, these events have a fall out. In case people have forgotten, it was the events in Iran that caused many changes to take place in our political chessboard. Some feel that Carter lost the election to Ronald Reagan over how he messed up the hostage crisis.
We must not forget that we did not always have our rights. The fact that we can walk behind a booth and vote is something people in many parts of the planet are dying for. There are people who are denied access to Youtube and the internet for religious and political reasons. Women may be forbidden to attend school in some parts of the planet.
I cannot turn off that switch in my head that tells me not to care. Not merely because I was a political science student at university, but also because I want others to have the same options as myself.

A VIDEO TO WATCH

I watched this video and really enjoyed it. I warn you, that it's in German, with English subtitles, so if you don't get into that sort of thing, you may want to avoid it. People who normally avoid plotlines based on true political events need not be afraid. This one is fast paced. Many in North America are not aware who these people are. In fact, it's a sad statement that it took September 11 to wake us up to what many in Europe have been dealing with for a long time; terrorisim. In this case, though, the faces are the middle classes' own kids and good looking ones at that. They were very well to do, in some cases. While the core group was small, those willing to help was large. Not only was it because of the times (late l960's and 70's) it was a guilt over what they felt took place in their parent's generation. They were driven to do something.
By the way, I could not but help notice the difference in the trailers between Europe and our market. More car scenes over here.

FOR DAVID C

I am going to force myself to have a cocktail tonight, even though I am in the middle of a bad headache cycle and I had to book off sick the other day. I say "cocktail" and not drink...there's a difference. A drink is bourbon while a cocktail is that stuff with the umbrella in it. I am going to have it for David C, who lived for this weekend and Christmas. You see, it is Pride Weekend in Vancouver and he went all out for both. He also loved the summer and his drinks on the deck, where he'd people watch. He enjoyed to people watch and run into "gentlemen callers."

David almost made it. He was a long-term survivor of the AIDS crisis, but the battle became to difficult and he didn't quite hit the right drugs. He lost too much weight at the end. However, he kept a good outlook even there; he thought that it gave him an ethereal look and still spoke about one hot looking nurse.

David accepted me even though I was a boring straight person. He's work on me when I came into town with my friend and he felt like he wanted to go out to a club. He's embellish me with makeup and find something that I could wear. I'm pretty modest and the stuff that I was wearing for trekking about town just wouldn't do to go out.

He was so talented. It was incredible the artwork he could produce. That wasn't his calling. Contrary to popular opinion, he wasn't always so flamboyant. He began his life with a career in the military and as a married man who produced a number of children. He was a Catholic and he never gave up that core faith with wich he had been raised, even though many religious people turned their backs on him. I met his mother after he died and you could see her struggle to understand. I left her my number, in case any of his kids ever wanted to look me up to ask questions about their Dad. None of them ever have.

So, David...something peach and sweet....and i must not forget that umbrella. The only thing missing is the gentleman caller. I will have to make do with the cats.
