SO THIS IS STRENGTH?

Pole dancing is empowering for girls...or so I've just been told. A group of secondary students in England were recently treated to a dance performance by a pole dancer. She was talented; I cannot deny it. Yet, was this the proper venue?
The dance was part of a fitness week series and it came to light as a number of students used their cell phones to record the event. The dancer defended her actions by stating that it empowered girls. Now, this is where I find issue with her rationale.
I think what empowers girls is the same thing that empowers boys. Dancing and gyrating around a pole isn't it. An uneven balance beam, or a pull up pole for arm strength---yes. We had a tetherball pole that both sexes attached a ball to and with which we played. None of us ever felt
the urge to yank off our clothes and mince around the damned thing. There is a sexual connotation attached to pole dancing, whether you're doing it in gym shorts, pasties or any other outfit. The fact that there are health benefits attached to it as a form of exercise does not alter this. I do not think this was the right venue to display this woman's talents.
